The Green Wedding Series: What is eco-minded planning?

Welcome to the Green Wedding Series, a guide to making environmentally and ethically friendly decisions when it comes to planning your wedding.

We know that weddings put a strain on the planet, according to Do the Green Thing a typical British wedding day produces 14.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, the annual carbon emissions per capita in the UK is about 9.1 tonnes. So yeah, weddings are a problem, but also, weddings are part of the richness of life and lots of people want to get married (and thank God they do or we’re out of a job) so for those of you who want to get married but would prefer to do it in a way that is kinder to the world and the people in it, that’s what this series is about.

We’ll cover venues, food, drink, flowers, stationery, transport, what you wear, and even gift lists to help you make those more eco-minded decisions where you can.

As Kermit would say, it’s not easy being green. And it’s definitely not, otherwise everyone would do it. Often sustainability is a privilege because it’s a more expensive route. Sometimes the more sustainable answer isn’t always clear - what’s better, a plastic alternative sourced five minutes up the road, or a biodegradable option from across the world? This blog series offers genuine tips and expert advice from those in the know which we hope will help you to think a little more green when you’re planning your wedding.

And we should probably say that where possible we take public transport or drive an electric car for any weddings, site visits or meetings. Whenever we fly we carbon balance (not perfect we know, but sometimes flights are necessary), we have vegetarian meals when on site at the wedding and we recycle and reduce waste as much as possible.
